Adolfo

Inherent Vice

Adolfo is Tito Stavrou’s brother-in-law and a companion appointed to keep Tito out of trouble. His appearances connect the private business of managing Tito’s money and movements with the wider plot: when Doc Sportello is pursued, Adolfo’s presence in Tito’s limousine helps make a quick escape possible.

Identity and Role

Adolfo is identified through Tito, who complains that his brother-in-law takes money as soon as it comes in. The explanation is practical rather than intimate: Inez has commissioned Adolfo to ride along in the limousine and keep Tito out of trouble. He therefore acts as both family connection and minder, accompanying Tito while Tito resists the oversight.

With Tito and Doc

When Trillium leaves to return to her room and sleep, Doc joins Tito and Adolfo in the limousine. Doc asks Tito about the Nine of Diamonds, a casino on Boulder Highway, and Tito offers to come inside with him, ostensibly to look around, eat at the buffet, and see the show. Adolfo is present for this transition from the ride to Doc’s errand, although the evidence does not specify what he does inside the casino.

The Escape

Adolfo’s clearest action comes when Doc reaches a loading dock with pursuers approaching. Tito drives the limousine around the corner, and Adolfo, positioned through the open sunroof, waves a submachine gun in the air. The pursuers stop to confer, giving Doc an opening to get onto the roof and into the vehicle. Adolfo then resumes his position inside as Tito drives away. The episode makes Adolfo’s role concrete: he helps turn Tito’s limousine from a means of travel into an improvised rescue, though the account does not establish that he fires the weapon or explain his intentions beyond participating in the escape.

Narrative Significance

Adolfo remains a supporting figure, defined by two kinds of service: keeping Tito in line at Inez’s request and assisting Tito when Doc needs to escape. His family tie does not prevent him from serving as an instrument of outside supervision, while his presence in the getaway shows how quickly that supervisory arrangement can become useful to Doc. The available evidence leaves his subsequent activities and his relationship with Doc unstated.
